When Tristan Prettyman picked up her father's old acoustic guitar at the age of fifteen and started strumming, her parents were initially angry that she had taken the instrument without permission. Thankfully, they soon realised the talent of the young woman from California and supported her burgeoning interest in music, which soon progressed to public performances in front of friends, all of whom urged Tristan to begin writing her own material.
As it happened, a friend of a friend was at one of these impromptu performances and worked with surf filmmakers Taylor Steele and Chris Molloy. Prettyman was asked to appear in their film 'Shelter' and her song 'Anything At All' featured on the soundtrack.
After a short time performing at local clubs she released her first album, 2005's 'Twentythree' Virgin Records. More touring and song writing followed, with a newer, more evolved sound defining her 2008 album 'Hello..x'.
The former model and surf girl had been written off by some as a 'beach babe', but the success of 'Hello..x' saw a new Prettyman, a singer with a much more blues filled sound that perfectly suited her throaty, whispery vocals. There's no doubt that Tristan has changed over the last few years, growing through personal and professional challenges, but she appears to be in a happier and more creative place as a result:
