Born Norma Deloris Egstrom on 26th May 1920 in Jamestown North Dakota, Peggy Lee was the youngest of 7 children who went on to be famed for her soft and cool singing style.
After the programming director of the local WDAY radio station changed her name to Peggy Lee, Peggy left home at 17 to escape the emotional abuse of her new stepmother. Escaping to LA in search of fame and fortune, early in 1942 Peggy had her first number one hit Somebody Else Is Taking My Place, followed in 1943 by her million selling Why Don't You Do Right? - the song for which she began famous.
